Flags across Colorado will fly at half-staff on Monday to honor Colorado Department of Transportation employees Trent Umberger and Nate Jones, who were killed when a Jeep driver crashed into them on U.S. 6 near Palisade on Wednesday.
Gov. Jared Polis ordered flags to be lowered in remembrance of the two Grand Junction maintenance workers in a news release Friday.
Umberger and Jones were following safety protocols when they parked off of the road to repair a sign, Colorado State Patrol officials said after an initial investigation.
They were removing a sign from the truck bed when the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee ran off the side of the road and hit them, according to CSP.
Umberger, Jones and a passenger in the Jeep, Kathi Ann Wallace of Grand Junction, died at the scene.
State patrol officials are still investigating the crash and potential charges against the driver, who sustained minor injuries.
