SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) —Good morning and Happy New Year! We are starting the morning with some passing clouds and chilly weather. Colder weather headlines are in the forecast as each day gets colder in the extended forecast.
On radar, low level clouds in eastern KELOLAND are still producing a few patches of flurries. You can see more light snow and flurry activity to our north and east this morning. Expect a few more areas of light snow tonight.
The short-term forecast will stay in the 20s in Sioux Falls today with a blend of sun and clouds.
Snow chances will be increasing this weekend. We are starting the new year with more snow on the ground in central and south central South Dakota.
Futurecast begins with a mainly dry forecast today. Temperatures will reach the 20s through much of the region. Expect patches of flurries and light snow showers tonight in northern and eastern KELOLAND. Temperatures will trend colder tomorrow with highs in the teens and lower 20s.
Can we pick up some snow this weekend? The short answer is yes, but we still have details to sort out in the coming days. Right now, this system is looking similar to the last one in terms of storm track, but it’s much colder. Therefore, we’ll be talking all snow this time. Plus, with temperatures much cold, the “fluff factor” will be a consideration. In other words, you can generate more snow with less moisture with temperatures in the single digits and teens. Keep in mind this system will turn stronger to our south, with heavy snow looking more likely in northern Kansas and northern Missouri by Sunday.
The chances of accumulating snow are pretty good this weekend through much of KELOLAND. We’ll keep you posted in the days ahead.
Don’t forget about the wind chills coming our way too. Some of the numbers are going to drop into the minus teens early next week!
Here are the details of the forecast.
