Snow showers accompany a passing arctic cold front Thursday. Briefly reduced visibility and quick coatings of snow will diminish before 10 p.m. Slick under untreated roads and walkways especially under the more vigorous bursts of snow.

FROPA – or “frontal passage” – in Indianapolis just before 2 p.m. and shifting winds to the northwest usher in a brand new batch of very cold air. Temps will fall steadily rest of the night.

We’ve been below freezing now for 5 straight days in what is now the coldest January and coldest winter to date in eight years. January 2025 is running 7° per day below normal, the coldest since 2018 and ranks 24th coldest on record!

Friday will open with wind-chills at or below zero under clearing skies. While sunshine will be plentiful, it will be a colder day with area temperatures creeping back above 20°. This cold will be slow to back off but the arctic and polar branches of the jet stream will slowly retreat next week. This will allow the first 40° day in nearly two weeks next Wednesday.
