We are lucky that the speakeasy scene in Pittsburgh has been growing in recent years- not just in the sense of establishments serving Prohibition-style cocktails, but also incorporating some hidden bar elements for a proper aesthetic.

At Co-Sign Speakeasy in the Bank on 8th building in Homestead, you get just that- a proper hidden speakeasy with classics and house creations all the same.

Go for the drinks and stay for the aesthetic and attention to detail at this one, because they really outdid themselves in the design just as much as the space. But, as with most of our articles, we don’t want to give too much away, so we’re going to focus on the drinks here!

Co-Sign Speakeasy Sends You Back in Time in Homestead

The menu at Co-Sign Speakeasy during our visit felt like an equal split between classic cocktails and seasonal house creations.

On the classics side of the menu, you have gems like a Smoked Old Fashioned, a Oaxaca Old Fashioned (made with mezcal and tequila over whiskey), a Pain Killer, Paper Plane, Penicillin, and more. During our winter visit, the seasonal side of the menu had a mix of fruit and floral-forward creations as well.

We stayed to the classics side of the menu for our first visit as we felt it fitting to stay with the classic speakeasy vibe of the bar.

We started with a Paper Plane and the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. The Paper Plane was a mix of bourbon, Aperol, amaro, and lemon and, while a bit more citrus-forward than we would prefer, was a solid iteration of the cocktail you don’t see all to often. The Oaxaca Old Fashioned was made with reposado tequila, mezcal, bitters, and agave and smoked prior to being delivered and is the kind of cocktail that packs a smokey punch- so be prepared if ordering that one.

For our second round, we opted to have one from each menu, including the classic Penicillin and the seasonal Madonna. The Penicillin is one of my personal favorite cocktails and contained two kinds of Scotch, ginger, honey and lemon and, like the Paper Plane, was a bit too heavy in the citrus department and undercut the intensity of the Scotches a little bit. The Madonna was rye whiskey based with Grenadine, grapefruit, lemon, an egg white, and a Luxardo cherry to finish and had a nice balance of fruit flavors that was balanced nicely with the creamy egg white on top (and was our personal favorite of the bunch).

While we enjoyed all of the cocktails we had (especially at their price points), we did find most trended a bit heavy on the citrus side of things, such that a few of our more spirit-forward drinks felt a bit less intense as a result. Still, the recipes stayed true to the classics here especially, and for those who want a craft-made cocktail that respects the original recipes, you’ll get that here with a stellar vibe to go along with it.

A Few Tips Worth Noting Before Visiting Co-Sign

When visiting, we also have a few tips, as this one is a proper speakeasy with a “hidden” entrance.

First, make a reservation, especially if you are visiting on a weekend. Co-Sign Speakeasy isn’t terribly large, and you may have a bit of a wait if you just walk in, depending on how busy they are. We saw seating be staggered for walk-ins during our visit to help accommodate wait times at the bar. We appreciated this when ordering, but just be aware you could have a wait without a reservation.

Second, you likely won’t be finding the entrance to this one alone. Instead of exploring, go check in at the bar across from the axe-throwing area on the main level of the Bank on 8th. You’ll likely be escorted upstairs to the bar and given the secret code to enter. (If you don’t have a reservation, they’ll also likely check on availability for you there, tell you if there’s a wait, etc.)

Third, while the bar doesn’t have a food menu beyond the welcome popcorn, you can order from Secretos de mis Abuelos which is also found on the first level of the Bank on 8th to enjoy with your cocktail. Puerto Rican food and cocktails!

Finally, ask your bartender if the bar has any other hidden secrets to see. I don’t want to spoil them here, but suffice it to say I blew the minds of people in the back room when I was given a tip to go explore further.

Overall, Co-Sign Speakeasy holds its own a stellar themed speakeasy in Homestead, and with a mix of classics and seasonal house creations, odds are good you’ll find several delicious cocktails that speak to you!

Co-Sign Speakeasy is located inside the Bank on 8th at 145 E 8th Ave in Homestead, PA. The complex features axe throwing, Secretos Puerto Rican restaurant, and many escape rooms as well.
