Two former Cincinnati police officers have different perspectives about a new gun law that will take effect Monday.It’s referred to as constitutional carry. It’s a measure Gov. Mike DeWine signed into law in March.The NRA applauded the action saying the legislation protects the second amendment and more than two dozen states have similar laws. The new gun law eliminates requirements for training and background checks. Those opposed include the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio.One former Cincinnati officer and the current local FOP president said he doesn’t agree with some of his fellow men and women in blue.“Am I fearful of law-abiding people carrying a firearm concealed with or without a permit? Absolutely not,” Dan Hils said. “I am not comfortable with a government telling you how you can defend yourself by putting restrictions on how you can defend,” Hils said.Another retired Cincinnati police officer, now an Ohio state senator, takes another position. Cecil Thomas said the gun discussion is very concerning to him.“Especially when you are saying everyone should be allowed to have a gun without even a check without even a permit,” Thomas said.
