Kadarius Toney was one of the players waived today by the Kansas City Chiefs, who continue to rebuild around MVP Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs are doing their best to keep up with the evolution of the NFL by turning over their roster to younger, newer talent. Which is why a year ago they drafted Rashee Rice and this year traded up for one of the fastest players in the draft, wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
To some, Toney will be remembered for his 65-yard punt return in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LVII helped deliver the Chiefs a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Others will remember his time in Kansas City for crucial drops in big moments of games, which started in last year’s season opener against the Detroit Lions.
The Chiefs and Andy Reid have done a masterful job balancing out Mahome’s record contract by not committing to long term deals elsewhere. Instead, they have offloaded players and drafted replacements, the most cost-effective strategy in the NFL.
The Chiefs open the NFL season on September 5th against the Baltimore Ravens.
