Terry’a Adams started her last day by visiting a cemetery. The 25-year-old woman spent Saturday honoring the birthday of a boyfriend killed four years ago in a car crash. But the celebration of his life would mark the end of hers.
Shortly after midnight, she was killed in a mass shooting at a gathering in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. Six other people, including a 17-year-old girl, were also shot.
Neighbors expressed frustration that calls to break up the large gathering went unaddressed. One resident said she called the police to report the chaotic crowd at 10 p.m., 11:05 p.m., and a third time around 12:30 a.m.
“Everybody on this block called them to get them kids,” said Larell Steel, an Austin neighborhood resident. “This could’ve been prevented. This could’ve been prevented if they just came and broken them kids up.”
