Chicago police and Northwestern University police responded to a report of shots fired at Northwestern’s downtown campus Monday evening, according to a safety alert.
Chicago police later said nobody had been injured, but that witnesses observed a woman fire a handgun once during a large fight in the street among several people, who then fled the scene.
Shots were fired outside Kellogg Wieboldt Hall on Chicago Avenue, an alert texted to university affiliates said. Recipients were advised to seek shelter and await further information.
By 9:30 p.m., the campus had been secured and assailants were in custody, the alert said.
In a 10:24 p.m. update, Chicago police said no offenders were in custody.
University representatives confirmed the campus was clear in a 10:30 p.m. email and said further information would come from Chicago police.
