April 27 is Grandma Gatewood Day in Ohio.The day celebrates Emma Gatewood, otherwise known as Grandma Gatewood, who was the oldest woman and first person to hike the Appalachian Trail three times, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.The Ohio General Assembly issued a declaration to celebrate Grandma Gatewood Day annually on April 27. Wildlife officials said one of Grandma Gatewood’s favorite trails was in Hocking Hills State Park, which is a 6-mile stretch now named the Grandma Gatewood Trail. This hike features views running from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls and back that allows hikers to see scenic beauty. The trail takes three to four hours to walk, according to Hocking Hills officials. There are some tough spots to walk through that have roots, rocks and rough terrain.Grandma Gatewood led the first winter hike in Hocking Hills and that has continued to take place every January.
