MEADE COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) — A California woman died due to injuries she sustained in a crash on July 18, five miles west of Piedmont, South Dakota.

The names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

According to a press release by the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2006 Toyota Highlander was traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 near mile marker 41 when a deer entered the roadway from the median.

It missed a vehicle in the left lane, jumped, and went through the windshield of the Highlander. The front passenger steered the vehicle off the roadway to the right, eventually coming to rest in the south ditch of Sturgis Road.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
