Three third-grade students at a Humboldt County elementary school were hospitalized after inadvertently eating weed gummies, police say.
According to the Arcata Police Department, a student brought the gummies to Jacoby Creek Elementary School in Bayside on Thursday, unaware they contained marijuana. After the child shared the candy with four classmates at recess, the children began showing signs of impairment. First responders initially evacuated the classroom in case the sick children were reacting to a carbon monoxide leak, but then learned the affected kids had eaten the gummies.
Three of the students needed hospitalization, but have since been released.
Jacoby Creek superintendent and principal Melanie Nannizzi emailed family members about the ordeal, calling it “a frightening incident for our entire school community.” Nannizzi told the Times-Standard that all the children involved are now OK.
Police are still investigating the incident to determine if child endangerment charges are warranted.
