SIOUX FALLS SD (KELO) — A 94-year-old man has died in a house fire in Brookings on Tuesday.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookings Fire Department were dispatched to a smoking home on 471st Avenue, near 217th Street around 4 p.m.
A social media post said when crews arrived, flames were already exiting the house from a window and the rest of the structure was filled with both smoke and flames. Firefighters were quickly able to enter the structure that was still on fire and locate a resident inside the house.
The resident was identified as Lyle Monsees, 94, who died in the fire.
Crews worked over the next several hours to extinguish the fire and were able to save a significant portion of the structure, the post says.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
