Nine years after a 22-year-old pregnant mother was found dead in her Jeep alongside a Brown County road, her killer remains free. Brittany Stykes was found shot to death on Aug. 28, 2013. Her 14-month-old daughter, Aubree, had also been shot. She survived.To this day, Stykes’ picture hangs on the front porch of her parents house in Ripley. Mary and David Dodson said that it will always be their daughter’s home. “It stays. The picture stays at least until we get our answers. It stays on the front porch,” Mary Dodson said.At the time of her death, Brittany Stykes was married to Shane Stykes. She was pregnant with their second child.On Aug. 28, Stykes had been at her mother-in-law’s house in Bethel. She left there, with Aubree, to go to see her parents in Ripley. It was her father’s birthday. Brittany Stykes never made it.A passerby spotted Brittany Styke’s yellow Jeep on the side of Route 68 in Brown County with her and Aubree inside.”It’s hard for me to believe, nine years later, whoever is involved in this has kept their mouth shut this long,” said David Dodson.The Brown County Sheriff’s Office said there were no shell casing left at the scene, and they have not determined a motive. Investigators said the direction of their initial investigation led them to Shane Stykes, but after numerous interviews and polygraphs, they did not consider him a suspect.”I believe there were a lot of mistakes made in the beginning and that worries me where they’ll go now,” David Dodson.With a new sheriff at the helm and a fresh set of detectives overseeing the case, Brittany Stykes’ family is hoping for a break in the investigation. Investigators told WLWT this is “an extremely active case.”There is a $20,000 reward being offered in this case.”They took something that wasn’t theirs to take, and I think it’s time they step up and admit they’ve done it, and maybe they can get things right with the Lord and they won’t have to burn in hell the rest of eternity,” Mary Dodson said.Brittany Stykes’ daughter, Aubree, is now 10 years old, and her grandparents said she’s growing into the young girl their daughter once was. “She’s beautiful,” Mary Dodson said.”She’s smart as can be,” David Dodson said.The public can submit anonymous tips on the Brown County Sheriff’s Office’s website.
