BRANDON, S.D. (KELO) — The fall season is here, but there is still one official weekend left of a flowery summer activity.

Snapdragons, cosmos, dahlias, and more can be found at Lavender Lane Flower Farm in Brandon. It is run by Emmalie and Lee Holt.

“I went to a flower farm near my hometown in Minnesota and just loved it. Felt so inspired and thought it was something that I could see myself doing,” owner of Lavender Lane Flower Farm, Emmalie Holt said.

“She was like, I think I know what I want to do. I want to start a flower farm. And I was like, Let’s do it,” husband, Lee Holt said.

The Holts prepare for flower season months in advance. They start growing the seeds inside in February.

“As soon as they’re about five, six inches tall, we start taking them outside to get acclimated, put them in the shade and then into full sun, since that’s what they’re under here. So that takes a couple of weeks and then everything in the ground, I think that took us about a week or two. And then from there it’s really just watering and letting everything grow up,” Emmalie said.

This weekend, they are having their last scheduled You-Pick event of the season.

“So on weekends, we just have everything set up in the farm stand. There’s jars, vases, scissors, everything that you need to create a bouquet. So people come out. It’s very self-serve once people get out here,” Emmalie said.

The Holts sell anywhere from 35-50 bouquets at each event.

While flower season is coming to a close, Emilee and lee are excited to have everyone out this weekend.

“It’s so peaceful out here. The breeze. Sometimes we have cows in the pasture. People are here. And it’s just the serenity of picking flowers and being out in nature, getting away from the hustle and bustle,” Lee said.

“It’s just been a really kind of joyful, peaceful, serene place. And that’s that was the goal when I started it. That’s what I wanted,” Emmalie said.

While it is the last scheduled You-Pick event of the season, because of the warm weather, the Holts may add more events.
