WASHINGTON, D.C. – SEPTEMBER 27th, 2024 – The National Wildlife Refuge Association expresses its deep appreciation to Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.) and John Kennedy (R-La.) for their bipartisan leadership in introducing a Senate resolution to designate the week of October 13-19, 2024, as National Wildlife Refuge Week. This resolution celebrates the significant role that national wildlife refuges play in wildlife conservation, supporting local communities, and offering diverse recreational opportunities for the public.
With 572 refuges and 38 wetland management districts across the U.S., the National Wildlife Refuge System protects vital ecosystems that are home to over 1,100 species of fish, 800 species of birds, and more than 380 species listed as threatened or endangered. This resolution highlights the vital importance of refuges in protecting biodiversity, supporting climate-resilient habitats, and contributing to the nation’s rich heritage of hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation.
Senator Coons emphasized the long-standing impact of the Refuge System, stating, “For more than 100 years, the National Wildlife Refuge System has protected our wildlife and ecosystems in Delaware and across the nation while strengthening local economies. Wildlife refuges like Bombay Hook and Prime Hook, which collectively cover more than 10,000 acres, maintain a healthy ecosystem, local aesthetics, and recreational opportunities in the First State. I am proud to lead the bipartisan National Wildlife Refuge Week resolution alongside Senator Kennedy as we continue to support and conserve biodiversity.”
Senator Kennedy echoed these sentiments, noting, “Louisiana is home to more than 23 refuges that help protect our state’s unique species and make us the sportsman’s paradise. This Wildlife Refuge Week, I am grateful for the opportunity to promote America’s natural environment as we preserve these ecosystems for future generations to revel in and enjoy.”
The Refuge System not only plays a crucial role in conserving wildlife and habitat but also supports local economies. Each year, refuges generate more than $3.2 billion for local economies and support over 41,000 jobs. The resolution recognizes these contributions, as well as the importance of fostering inclusive outdoor recreation and conservation education across communities through the Urban Wildlife Conservation Program.
This resolution demonstrates that protecting America’s wildlife and natural landscapes is a nonpartisan issue that transcends political boundaries. National wildlife refuges benefit everyone, providing spaces for recreation, conservation, and education while serving as a powerful tool in the fight against climate change by conserving climate-resilient habitats.
In celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week, refuges across the country will be hosting a variety of events, including bird-watching, photography tours, guided nature walks, and educational programs for all ages. These events highlight the ways national wildlife refuges contribute to the quality of life for people and wildlife alike.
