BEECH GROVE, Ind. — Beech Grove is planning to add a new roundabout at a “dangerous” intersection in a bid to improve safety and traffic flow.
Beech Grove Mayor James Coffman announced Thursday that the Indianapolis Metropolitan Organization is planning to invest $3.4 million to construct a roundabout at the intersection near Churchman and Emerson Avenue. Beech Grove is providing a local match of more than $1.5 million, according to the release.
The intersection is located near Hornet Park Community Center and Beech Grove High School. The release said 70 crashes have been reported at this intersection within the last two years.
The intersection is one of 19 “high-traffic” intersections identified by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Organization through a safety study involving the City of Beech Grove, the City of Indianapolis, emergency service professionals and traffic engineers.
“The Indianapolis MPO is a valued partner in making the streets of Beech Grove safer for our citizens and visitors who travel them every day,” said Mayor Coffman. “The MPO’s investment in our community will have a real-world impact and make a difference in the lives of countless individuals through the transformation of a dangerous intersection to traffic design that is calmer and more intentional.”
The release said the City of Beech Grove project expects to launch the “conversion from traffic signals to the roundabout in 2027.”
