Beach Park Middle School went on lockdown for approximately two hours and school officials checked lockers on Monday after an 11-year-old made a threat on Snapchat, according to police.

Lake County sheriff’s office spokesman Chris Covelli said the school worked with sheriff’s deputies to find the student who made the threats, and that the “lockdown was lifted once it was determined all of the students and staff were safe.”

“The student was in attendance today,” Covelli said. “However, he did not have any weapons in his possession.”

The sheriff’s office is referring the case to the juvenile court system, Covelli said, and the school is “taking administrative actions.”

Attempts to reach Beach Park School District 3 administrators Monday afternoon were not immediately successful.

“Several of our deputies and detectives responded quickly,” Covelli said. “They worked with school officials to ensure everyone in the building was safe. We continue to investigate the matter at this time.”
