U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin said Social Security and Medicare are at risk if Donald Trump is elected in November during remarks at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago Thursday night.
The Madison Dem told delegates her mother was a teen struggling with addiction when she was born, and she never met her father. Baldwin noted she was raised by her grandparents, David and Doris.
“In every way a child needs, my grandparents were there for me. And as they grew older, it was my privilege to be there for them,” Baldwin said. “So, when I work to protect Medicare and Social Security, I do it with the personal knowledge of what those big programs meant in small, but deeply meaningful ways to my grandparents.”
Baldwin said she knows what the programs mean for parents and grandparents, but “that is all at risk today.”
“Donald Trump was asked what he would do about Social Security and Medicare, and he said— and I quote —’there’s a lot you can do in terms of cutting,’” she said. “Cutting? He’s talking about cutting Social Security and Medicare while giving a huge new tax break to billionaires and corporations? Well, Kamala Harris is not going to let that happen, and Tim Walz is not going to let that happen; we are not going to let that happen.”
Madison businessman Eric Hovde, Baldwin’s GOP opponent, in response to the speech said Baldwin’s record doesn’t match her rhetoric.
“From record high inflation to the border crisis and a broken healthcare system, everyday Wisconsinites are struggling because of VP Harris and Sen. Baldwin’s failed policies,” Hovde said. “It’s time for change!”
