A 15-month-old girl was brought by family members to an Oakland fire station at 6:15 p.m. on Monday after being hit by gunfire, officials said.
The injured infant received medical aid from firefighters at Fire Station 4, located at 1235 International Blvd., and an ambulance was summoned to the station, said Michael Hunt, a spokesperson with the Oakland Fire Department. Minutes later, the infant was rushed to the emergency room at Oakland Children’s Hospital.
“It seems like the gunshot wound was in the torso,” Hunt told SFGATE over the phone.
Minutes before the infant was taken to the fire station, the Oakland Police Department said it responded to a ShotSpotter, a device designed to detect gunfire, only a block and a half way from the fire station at 12th Avenue and East 15th Street. As officers were responding to the scene, they learned an infant was being treated for gunshot wounds at the fire station.
KTVU reported that the infant was riding in a car when it was hit by gunfire but officials could not confirm this detail.
Hunt said at 8:30 p.m. that the child’s condition is unknown.
The police department is asking anyone with information on the incident to call (510) 238-3426.
