The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged a woman from Aurora in connection with a four-vehicle crash on July 24 in Aurora that killed a man, officials announced on Monday.
An investigation indicated that Ailisa Gutierrez, 20, of the 1700 block of Daisy Street, was driving a Dodge Challenger westbound on East New York Street at speeds over 100 mph on July 24, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department. Gutierrez was racing a motorcycle, officials said in the release.
She struck a curb and lost control after making a sudden lane change into the right-turn lane toward North Eola Road, the release stated. The vehicle then became airborne and collided with three cars stopped at a red light before rolling over multiple times, police said.
Gerardo Cuatzo, 45, who was the driver of one of the cars hit by Gutierrez’s vehicle, died at the scene, according to the release. Two other drivers also sustained injuries, the release stated.
Gutierrez was charged with two counts each of reckless homicide, reckless driving and improper lane usage along with one count each of aggravated street racing, speeding 35 mph or more over the limit, following too closely, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and speeding, the release stated.
A warrant for Gutierrez’s arrest was issued on Nov. 11, and she was taken into custody on Nov. 20, according to the release. She was released after a pretrial hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 18, police said.
