An Aurora City Council committee has recommended a project to add traffic calming and aesthetic elements to a busy downtown intersection.
The changes would be made to part of the intersection of Water and Benton streets.
Aldermen on the Infrastructure and Technology Committee recently recommended a $492,293 contract with Huntley-based Landmark Contractors, Inc. for the work.
Kurt Muth, of the city’s Engineering Division, said the city would be looking at installing landscaped curb islands and knuckles from two sides of the intersection. It would cut down the length of time it takes for people to cross Benton.
“The traffic flies through there,” Muth said. “It can be a little harrowing to cross there at times.”
The work would include putting in newer-style brick crosswalks similar to other places downtown. The changes would not only cut down the length of the walk to cross the street, it would “keep traffic from flying through there,” Muth said.
The council’s Committee of the Whole on Tuesday will look at the contract with the expectation of sending it for a full City Council vote July 23.
