SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — No. 16 Augustana pulled out a 27-21 win over USF at Kirkeby-Over Stadium Saturday to hold onto the “Key to the City.” It’s the second straight year Augustana won the rivalry game.
The Vikings and Cougars each scored on their opening drives, and the score held at 7-7 until late in the first half when the Vikes added 10 more points to take a 17-7 lead into the locker room.
The Coo struck first in the second half to pull within three. Augie pushed the lead to two touchdowns on the first play of the fourth quarter. Sioux Falls closed the gap with 11 minutes left.
Then in the final seconds, the Vikings attempted a field goal to extend the advantage back to two scores, but it was blocked. The Cougars took over with 14 seconds left but ran out of time to muster a drive together.
The Vikings outgained the Coo by 99 yards on the ground and averaged eight yards per carry. Jarod Epperson accounted for 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Camden Dean led USF with 285 yards through the air and gained 81 yards on the ground.
The Vikes claimed at least a share of the NSIC championship with the win.
Augustana visits Bemidji State next week, while USF hosts SMSU to close out the regular season.
