DEADWOOD, S.D. (KELO) — Attorney General Marty Jackley is hosting Attorneys General from around the nation for a summit this week.
Around 20 A-G’s came together in Deadwood to talk about several important issues currently going on in our country.
This conference offers up the potential to get several Attorneys General together to discuss possible solutions for issues facing people across the country.
“These issues don’t stop at boundaries. They don’t stop at state boundaries, nor do they frankly stop at our nation’s boundaries. So coming together to talk about important issues like mental health, gaming issues, you name it are quite important to us and so I’m glad to be here,” Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford said.
“We’re able to see what other Attorney Generals have done, how they’ve handled issues. Certainly, we don’t agree on every issue but we’re never disagreeable. There’s mutual respect amongst Attorney Generals. I always like to say, I’ve never had an Attorney General not take my call,” South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said.
Some of the topics include sports betting and online gambling, mental health initiatives, and cannabis laws.
“We borrow ideas from one another all the time. You talked about marijuana, I’m from Las Vegas, Nevada, we have legalized marijuana, we also have legalized gaming. So conversations around things we have expertise in where we consider ourselves the gold standard for, provides us an opportunity to share those experiences,” Ford said.
One major topic is how to better help victims, something Jackley addressed Congress about in an effort to fight human trafficking.
“I reached out and talked to several Attorney Generals about organizations, what direction to go, whether it be the human trafficking side or CASA, all those things. And that’s the type of expertise that time and time again helps me be a better Attorney General for South Dakota,” Jackley said.
Each major topic throughout these conferences has a panel of experts to better get these conversations going.
