INDIANAPOLIS — A 27-year-old man is in jail accused of murder following a deadly shooting this week on Indy’s near west side.

Just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to a neighborhood along Belmont near George Washington High School and found 40-year-old Randy White shot to death on the scene.

Police said cooperation from the community helped identify 27-year-old Alexander Cross as the killer.

“Without the community, we couldn’t solve these cases,” said IMPD Officer Shayonna Gray.

In fact, following the community’s assistance, Cross was tracked down and arrested by the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit just two days later.

“Accountability is a big thing, so if you know someone has done something, hold them accountable for it,” said Gray.

According to the affidavit in the case, witnesses told police the victim and suspect had gotten into an argument a few weeks earlier after the suspect had been kicked out of his home for carrying a gun while on probation.

Although Cross admitted he pulled the trigger he claimed he acted in self-defense.

At the time of his arrest, Cross was found carrying the murder weapon.

The gun and Cross’ clothes were covered in gold paint. The victim was found lying next to a can of gold spray paint that appeared to have been shot.

On the night of the murder, Cross had two active warrants for his arrest.

Court records show Cross failed to show up to court hearings in both Johnson County and Wabash County in January.

The Wabash County case involved felony drug charges.

Cross is being held without bond pending the filing of formal charges by the prosecutor’s office.
