Hearts are heavy in Anderson Township, where Eli Jones’ classmates and community members are coping with the aftermath of a deadly crash along Clough Pike early Monday morning.“It’s kind of sad to go home knowing that one of your peers has died,” said Lucas Baumgartner, a student. Hamilton County sheriff’s deputies say the crash happened around 1 a.m. on Monday, near the intersection of Clough Pike and Eight Mile. A driver struck and killed Jones, 15. “It was kind of devastating because it’s someone that’s, you know, my age. It can happen almost any time because I walk around and run across these streets all the time,” Baumgartner said. After the teen was hit, deputies think the driver turned into a driveway and then sped away. Pieces of the car found at the scene indicate it was a Honda Civic.”It’s a human life. And when people are around them and they build connections and they just break off because someone was driving carelessly,” said Diego Raigoza, a student. One of the first to this scene was a passing motorist, 56-year-old Douglas Dtansell, and his two sons. Amid the chaos, Stansell had a medical emergency of his own. He was taken to Mercy Hospital where his daughter says he later died of a heart attack.”It was just overwhelming for him. And it was sensitive towards him because he had kids similar and around the age that it just kind of overtook him,” said his daughter, Makayla Stansell.Police are still searching for the suspect in this hit-and-run. The driver is believed to be driving a Honda Civic, now missing the right fender. If you have any information, you are urged to call the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
