MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala marched to the Women’s Tennis Association 125 Workday Canberra International Round of 16 after beating Austria’s Sinja Kraus 6-2, 6-4, on Tuesday at Canberra Tennis Centre.

It took an hour and 20 minutes for Eala to beat the World Ranked No.211 Kraus to end the year 2024 on a winning note.

“Ending 2024 on a high! Into the round of 16 here in Canberra with a good win today. 2025 here I come!” wrote Eala on Instagram after her match.

The World No.147 Eala will be battling Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands on New Year’s Day on Wednesday at 10:50 p.m., battling for a quarterfinal berth.

The 19-year-old Filipino worked her way to the main draw after dominating the qualifying round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Catherine Aulia.

She bucked a lethargic start in the final qualifying game to beat home bet Alana Subasic, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1, on Monday.

Eala was supposed to play her first doubles game of the Canberra tour with Sayaka Ishi of Japan, but their match against Marina Stakusic of Canada and Elsa Jacquemot of France was canceled.
