The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s artistic director, Robert Battle, will take part in a virtual panel discussion in collaboration with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights on February 1 at 6:30 p.m. The panel will be available to view on Facebook and YouTube.
The two organizations were scheduled to present a panel discussion in person at the Civil Rights museum on January 12, but the event was canceled because of bad weather.
The virtual event, “The Time is Now: Truth, Transformation and Triumphs,” will also feature Lance Wheeler, director of exhibitions at the Civil Rights museum; activist and historian Dr. Clarissa Myrick-Harris, who is on the faculty of Morehouse College; and the national director of AileyCamp, Nasha Thomas. NBC News correspondent Blayne Alexander will moderate. The panel will highlight projects that illustrate the awakening transformation of society and recognize triumphs on the march to freedom.
The panel takes place against the backdrop of the current exhibition at the Civil Rights museum, March on Washington: 60 Years Later, and a new production of choreographer Alvin Ailey’s Survivors (1986), which the Alvin Ailey company will present during their Fox Theatre engagement February 16-19. Survivors is a tribute to the courage of Nelson and Winnie Mandela.
