SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Lindsey Greene is considering bringing home a new pet.

The potential adopter’s dog, Maci, was having a meet and greet with shelter dog Duke at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society on Monday morning.

“I think she wants a friend, and I’ve always wanted multiple dogs. Keep me active, keep her active,” Greene said.

The non-profit is in need of more people like Green to walk through its doors.

The humane society has seen a big influx in animals over the past month, putting the shelter well over capacity.

“We have almost 400 animals on site. We technically have room for about 310, so we just have a huge number of animals right now,” Humane society executive director James Oppenheimer said.

As of Monday morning, more than 100 animals were available for adoption, with even more being prepared for adoption.

“We have some awesome cats and dogs and small animals here. If you’re going to get a pet, then why not give a home to an animal who really needs it,” Oppenheiemer said.

“Especially right now because of our capacity issue, but I think it’s always important to come and adopt, especially if you’re looking for a new family member,” Adoption counselor Ashtyn Leonard said.

And Greene and Maci may have found that family member.

“She seems to be doing okay, so hopefully they’ll be best friends,” Greene said.

Starting Monday through the end of the month, dog and cat adoptions are cheaper, thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event.

For example, an adult dog is now $50 instead of $125.
