SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A game of chance is helping a local nonprofit further its mission.

2-year-old Willie is part of a long list of dogs looking for a forever home through Dakota Dachshund Rescue.

“We are a foster-based rescue, so that means that all of our dogs go into foster homes. We don’t have kennels or anything,” Dakota Dachshund Rescue board member Rodger Lacy said.

The nonprofit is currently raising money through its “Find the Queen of Hearts” game each Tuesday at Remedy Brewing Company, where the drawing is in its 35th week.

“We started at $10,000. This week we’re going to be at $45,000,” Lacy said.

The eventual winner will split the jackpot with Dakota Dachshund Rescue. The organization currently has 24 dogs available for adoption.

“The adoption fee that we charge doesn’t come close to covering the vetting, the paying for the food for the fosters, dentals, and then we get in some special need dogs that we get the dog in and find out it has to have heart surgery and it’s going to be a $5,000 dog. Well, we certainly can’t charge that so that’s why we have to fundraise so we have the money to be able to save these dogs,” Lacy said.

“Half of it would be about $22,000 roughly, somewhere right around that ballpark, so it’s a really great way to start the year,” Remedy Brewing Company Events Coordinator Aaron Nelson said.

Nelson says the brewery is always willing to lend a hand.

“We have a passion for dogs around here. We have probably the most pet friendly place in downtown, but no it speaks to us. It’s really good to give back to our community here in Sioux Falls,” Nelson said.

And with 20 cards left in the deck, Dakota Dachshund Rescue hopes the game and giving are nowhere near done.

“Personally, I would like to see it go out to 50 cards or something like that,” Lacy said.

Allowing the jackpot time to grow.

The “Find the Queen of Hearts” drawing is every Tuesday night at 7:11 at Remedy Brewing at 8th & Railroad in Sioux Falls.
