The Basic Academy and Faith Lutheran high school football teams are representing the area tonight in Northern Nevada looking to extend the region’s dominance over programs from the opposite part of the state.
A Reno team hasn’t won a large-school state championship since McQueen beat Palo Verde in 2008, and northern schools only have three wins in the state semifinals over the last 14 years.
Some of that is Bishop Gorman’s run of 10 consecutive state titles through 2019, but Liberty has also posted wins in the state semifinals against Reno opponents.
Basic, which has outscored the competition 52-14 in winning its initial two games of season, is in the Nevada capital to take on Carson High. Faith Lutheran, also with a 2-0 record, takes on host Damonte Ranch of Reno.
The local docket is highlighted by Foothill hosting Centennial in a matchup of preseason top-10 opponents searching for the first win of the season after dropping their initial two contests. Additionally, Green Valley hosts Sierra Canyon of California — ranked No. 40 in the state by Max Preps — and Desert Pines takes on Legacy in a showdown of class 5A schools.
