Anthos Bakery in Castle Shannon is a delightful family-owned Greek bakery and cafe. In addition to their amazing sweet and savory breads and pastries, they offer a full breakfast and lunch menu brimming with Greek and Mediterranean goodies. The delicious food is served in an adorable cafe setting that’s cheerful and welcoming.

The instant we walked into Anthos Bakery we were smitten – the pastry case beckoned us with its beautiful creations, olive oils, and other pantry items for sale called our names, and the cheerful Mediterranean design with blue and white tiles invited us to sit down and stay a while.

Anthos is a Charming Greek Bakery in the South Hills

Anthos Bakery

We perused the menu and had a hard time choosing what to order as everything sounded so perfect. The menu included breakfast sandwiches and toasts, salads, traditional Greek entrees like moussaka and pastitsio, brunch specials like French toast, and an entire meze menu full of hummus and other Greek dips and spreads. And of course, there is a full pastry case and freshly baked breads, too!

We placed our order at the counter and the staff was incredibly helpful with my nut allergy, steering us toward pastries, breads, and entrees that were safe.

Greek Frappe at Anthos Bakery

We split a Greek frappe to start, which was a creamy whipped iced coffee drink with sugar and milk. It was so creamy and luscious, almost like drinking coffee whipped cream. We liked that we got to choose how much sugar we wanted added – we opted for a medium amount, and it was just the right balance for us of bitter and sweet.

Soon after choosing our table our “to-go” items arrived, a large oatmeal cookie and rosemary olive fougasse. Of course, we couldn’t resist munching on these while we waited. The cookie was crisp and chock full of dried cherries, and the fougasse was light and airy like focaccia with savory olive and herb notes.

Anthos Pittsburhg Spanikopita

For our entrees, we opted for the spanakopita and the mushroom toast. The spanakopita was pure comfort food with layers of crisp, flaky phyllo encasing a creamy, cheesy spinach filling. Sesame seeds on top provided a nutty contrast. It was served with a light and fresh simple green salad.

Mushroom Toast at Anthos Bakery in Castle Shannon

The mushroom toast was our favorite dish of the whole meal. It started with a thick, crusty slice of house-made sourdough bread toasted to perfection, topped with sauteed mushrooms (portobello, cremini, and oyster), and leeks in a bechamel sauce. The whole thing was broiled such that a layer of crispy, cheesy deliciousness developed on the top and sides of the toast. The mushrooms were creamy from the bechamel, and the leeks brought a nice complementary oniony goodness. This dish was seemingly simple, but the flavors were spectacular.

Anthos truly impressed us – it’s the kind of place that we would love to visit regularly for weekend brunch, a weekday coffee, and to pick up crusty loaves of bread and sweet pastries. The family-owned feel, the Mediterranean vibes, and the delicious breads, pastries, and Greek cafe-style food of Anthos make for a winning combination.
