[MADISON, WI] – The Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin team is partnering with the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Justice to conduct a “mapping exercise” on how Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment regarding crime victims’ rights, known as Marsy’s Law, directly impacts the criminal justice process for survivors. The group will literally map the path of the victim through the criminal justice process from the time a call is made to law enforcement through post-sentencing proceedings.
This exercise will look at who victims interact with at each “touch point” of the criminal justice process to better understand and identify areas of concern as they relate to the implementation of Marsy’s Law. This is to highlight what has been working well since Marsy’s Law went into effect two years ago, as well as identify areas for improvement.
The exercise will be facilitated by David Perlman who works on special projects with the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Representatives from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, circuit courts, and victim services organizations will also participate.
“The mapping of a crime victims’ journey throughout the criminal justice process offers a unique opportunity to learn and better understand every angle of the court process for all parties,” said Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr, “The rights upheld by Marsy’s Law are crucial to giving victims a voice and getting them involved in the court process, which ultimately leads to justice being served for all.”
