Today, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) announced its first round of legislative endorsements, consisting of a selection of incumbents trusted to utilize their platforms and voices to push for the protection of reproductive rights for all Wisconsinites. Now more than ever, legislative action in Wisconsin is vital. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade it is loud and clear that rights we have had for generations are up for debate. We need bold actors to stand up and speak out for all Wisconsinites.
These endorsements are vital, for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has already had to suspend abortion services on June 24 and refer patients out of state for abortion care after the loss of Roe and the enforcement of Wisconsin law 940.04. Those being endorsed are running for positions within the governing body deciding on the rights of Wisconsinites.
Statement from Steven Webb, PPAWI Director of Organizing
“PPAWI is proud to endorse this round of incumbent candidates. This is an important election, for we are in the midst of a huge shift in regards to the rights of our people. The blatant disregard that Wisconsin Republicans have displayed for the lives of 3.1 million people at risk of losing access to safe and legal abortion care is a betrayl to Wisconsinites statewide. With the Supreme Court ready to repeal Roe, Wisconsin’s law criminalizing abortion without exception for rape, incest or the health of the woman could go back into effect immediately following the Supreme Court’s decision. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has already had to suspend abortion services after June 25 and administer the refferal process of patients to travel out of staste for abortion care.
“The outdated criminal abortion ban is oppressive, and dervies from a society in which Wisconsin Republicans aim to return to. Wisconsin law 940.04 was enacted in 1849, when the only voice of power was that of the white man. The communities affected the most are low-income communities of color. We all deserve the freedom to choose if and when we want to start a family. Now that the Supreme Court has made the devastating decision to overturn Roe v Wade, Wisconsinites need our state leaders to take action to protect abortion access including repealing our state’s criminal abortion ban.”
