After a weekend of festivities, Cincinnati’s Juneteenth celebrations wrapped up Monday with a parade.”Celebrating the end of slavery, that is a major accomplishment for our country and something really wonderful to unite around,” Kate Zaidan said.Zaidan attended the parade with her daughter.The federal holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The year 2022 marks 35 years of the Juneteenth festival in Cincinnati and Monday marked the city’s first parade.”We have to celebrate the happy, but we also have to acknowledge the sad, and remember what got us here and why we have to make sure that we all are celebrating. And, we all are enjoying this holiday,” Lydia Morgan said.Morgan is chair of the Cincinnati Juneteenth Committee, which helped support the organizers who put together the parade. The parade celebration included dancing and performances by local groups. Supporters joined with city leaders walking the parade route.West End resident Terri Willingham said Juneteenth was an American event and is an American celebration.”We are all human. We should love one another all the time, and help one another all the time, because we’re all human. And, it’s so important the world is recognizing this,” Willingham said.Organizers said they want to make the parade an annual event.
