INDIANAPOLIS — Five people and several cats were displaced by a residence fire that broke out on the near northwest side of Indianapolis late Sunday afternoon.

Per an Indianapolis Fire Department Facebook post, crews responded to the 600 block of West 31st Street around 4:07 p.m. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found smoke and fire pushing from a single-story residence.

Soon after they made it to the area, firefighters began an aggressive attack on the blaze. IFD reported that the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes.

Officials confirmed no firefighters or civilians were injured during the blaze. A family of five and their cats, however, were displaced by fire.

IFD’s victims assistance unit is working to find shelter for the displaced family. Investigators believe the fire started after food was left unattended on the stove.
