The Foster Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire soon will host a unique exhibition examining the way disability is represented in the visual arts.
“Beyond the Gaze: Representing Disability in Contemporary Art,” curated by UW-Eau Claire student Josh Deutschlander and faculty member Jill Olm, associate professor of art & design, includes works by disabled artists as well as pieces depicting the disability experience.
The exhibition will be on view from Jan. 31-March 5, with an opening reception from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30. All gallery events are free and open to the public. Persons with disabilities requesting accommodations are asked to email [email protected] at least five business days in advance of the event.
Artwork in the exhibition spans a variety of mediums, such as drawing, sculpture, photography and more. The event seeks to challenge societal perceptions and foster an understanding of the complexities of disability identity. Artists featured in this exhibition are Clovis Blackwell, Matt Bodett, Victoria Dugger, Ayin Es, Kae Pershon, Pooja Pittie, Alex Dolores Salerno and Gwynneth VanLaven.
This event could have a significant impact on campus and the Eau Claire community, sparking discussions that go beyond the gallery. It offers a chance to explore the diverse lived experiences of people with disabilities and to see art as a powerful tool for advocacy, education and empowerment. We hope to promote understanding, inclusivity and a greater appreciation for disabled artists’ contributions by showcasing a diverse range of perspectives and artistic styles.
