SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Every year, 40% of food produced globally goes to waste according to the World Wildlife Fund. Because of these extreme numbers, a local business has joined an app to help keep good food out of the landfill.
At Intoxibakes in downtown Sioux Falls, you will find beautiful cupcakes, both alcohol infused and not. However, sometimes, things can happen to cupcakes that make them less appealing.
“If they’ve been in the case for a day or two and they’re starting to kind of get not super dried out, but dried out to a point where we don’t think they’re necessarily worth full price for our customers. We also have times where we’re running low on a specific flavor of frosting, and so we kind of have ugly cupcakes that we need to get rid of,” Intoxibakes Co-owner, Shannon Johnson said.
While those items are still completely fine to eat, it’s something the owners don’t want to sell at full price. Because of this, Intoxibakes has joined ‘Too Good To Go’. It’s an app that allows different restaurants and food stores to sell mystery bags full of goodies.
“I heard about it a couple of years ago. It was pretty popular in bigger cities. And then it went live in Sioux Falls,” Intoxibakes Co-owner, Josie Layton said.
While you may not know what is in the bag, you do know how much your items are worth, and you can buy them at a discounted price.
“Our minimums have to be between $12 and $15 of our store value and then they all sell for $4.99 on the app. So the app sets that up for us and then we just have to kind of make that promise to the customer that you are getting that number for value,” Layton said.
As Intoxibakes hopes to inspire other people to live more sustainable, and reduce food waste however you can.
“Wasting food is bad because we don’t like to have delicious treats go to the garbage. Most of the time we try to give them to like our friends and family, but we can only give away so much stuff. But we want to make sure that our customers get all of the delicious treats that we’ve made,” Johnson said.
“There’s a lot of things that can go out of the kitchen that people throw in the trash can, but it’s still completely edible. You messed up someone’s food order that day. Throw it on the app. Someone will buy it immediately, I promise. We’re making bags all the time and they sell in like 10 minutes. So don’t throw your food away,” Layton said.
As of right now, the only other businesses in Sioux Falls on the app are Oh My Cupcakes! and Circle K, but other companies are working to get on it.
If you are a business looking to join the app, you can contact Intoxibakes, and they can help you avoid the app’s fee for the first 30 days.
