SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A white coating has covered many parts of KELOLAND, and while there is snow on the ground in much of the state, it is hoarfrost that many are now seeing.
“It’s pretty murky out there,” said KELOLAND meteorologist Adam Rutt, who discussed the foggy weather on Tuesday. “We’ve had reports of visibility well below a mile or half mile at times, even around here in Sioux Falls. And you just go out on the streets and it is a struggle to go from one intersection to the other and be able to see the next light.”
Rutt says the conditions are ideal for this kind of fog. Between the moisture present in the snow on the ground, the lack of wind, and the temperature matching the dew point, the fog came in thick.
“Get all that together, and the end result is struggling to be able to see,” Rutt said.
As for where the fog is, Rutt showed a map, indicating that it’s most of the state east of the Missouri, with the exception of the northeast corner.
A big part of why the fog is sticking around is the time of year.
“One of the big X factors in the sun angle,” said Rutt. “We are at our lowest sun angle of the year, just barely past the winter solstice. So that sun has to work really hard to burn off that fog this time of year.”
Rutt says he doesn’t expect the fog to hang around through Christmas Day, but said it could still be around through the morning.
