INDIANAPOLIS — An investigation is underway after a crash left a woman dead on the north side of Indianapolis Thursday night.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 10:08 p.m. to the intersection of W. 79th Street and N. Meridian Street in response to reports of a personal injury crash and a vehicle fire.

A preliminary investigation found two single occupant vehicles crashed head on, causing one of the vehicles to catch fire with a woman inside. An officer attempted to put out the flames, while a passerby attempted to free the woman from the car, but were unable to do so, according to police.

The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said. The second driver was not injured.

Investigators reported the second driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with detectives.

This marks the second fatal crash to occur in the Circle City Thursday night after IMPD confirmed a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Rockville Road.
