SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The University of South Dakota-Sioux Falls campus was closed Thursday for six hours as a hazardous materials disposal crew removed expired chemical materials.
USD says peroxide-forming chemicals were found in the Science & Technology Building on their Sioux Falls campus.
According to a news release sent by USD, peroxide-forming chemicals are a class of compounds that have the ability to form explosive peroxide crystals when exposed to various storage conditions or extended storage times. These peroxide crystals may be reactive when subjected to certain conditions like friction or shock.
The USD–Sioux Falls campus was scheduled to reopen at noon on Thursday.
