Since 2020, Kari Lake has served as one of the leading voices of the MAGA movement in Arizona, and now she will serve as the Director of the Voice of America.
According to an announcement by the Trump-Vance administration, Lake will work closely with the next head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, “to ensure that the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY.”
Voice of America is funded by the federal government to share “comprehensive coverage of the news and telling audiences the truth.”
Since 1942, the organization, operating in over 40 languages, has spread American “news” across the globe to serve the interests of the U.S.
For nearly 30 years, Lake had been a fixture in the Phoenix-area news business, first as a reporter in 1994 and then as a longtime anchor for KSAZ-Fox10. Then in March 2021, she released a video explaining to viewers why they would not be seeing her back in the anchor chair.
The Emmy Award-winning Lake announced she was stepping away from broadcasting in the country’s 11th largest television market because the profession of journalism was “in many ways unrecognizable” to what journalism was when she walked into her first newsroom in 1992.
She was then recruited to run in Arizona’s 2022 gubernatorial race. Although she lost that race, she gained the loyalty of President Donald Trump and many of his supporters.
In 2024, Lake won the Arizona Republican Party’s U.S. Senate primary race but lost in the General Election to Congressman Ruben Gallego.
Supporters of Lake say she is the perfect fit for the Voice of America spot because “she can spot socialist propaganda when she sees it.”
Critics of the VOA say that since Presidents Obama’s tenure, the Voice of America served anything other than American values.
According to Reuters, “During his first term in office, Trump clashed with Voice of America (VOA) and accused it of amplifying Chinese propaganda.
“I am honored that President Trump has asked me to lead the Voice of America,” tweeted Lake. @VOANews is a vital international media outlet dedicated to advancing the interests of the United States by engaging directly with people across the globe and promoting democracy and truth.
