SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It’s a good week for skiers and snowboarders in the Sioux Falls area.

Great Bear Ski Valley is getting ready to open for the season.

It sounds like ski season at Great Bear as the snow guns continue filling in the slopes.

“This is music to my ears,” Director of Mountain Operations Kyle Vanderberg said.

The recreation spot will open to season pass holders Thursday.

On Friday, Great Bear opens to the general public.

“Over the past couple years, this is early, so we’re very excited,” General Manager Dan Grider said.

“To have all these new employees come out and see it this early…returning employees are really excited to see it open this early, and just to get open before Christmas break is fantastic,” Vanderberg said.

It’s a welcome change from last season when Great Bear opened in January and saw its shortest season on record.

“Last year we had 35 days of operation. Typically, we have 75 to 80. It was just an odd year last year, but that’s in the past. We’re looking forward,” Grider said.

For now, there will be limited runs available

“Our goal is to be 100 percent open by December 21st,” Grider said.

Still, skiers and snowboarders can get a start on some fun.

“It’s still going to be a blast,” Vanderberg said.

Because the runs are limited, day tickets need to be pre-purchased online.
