SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A gun incident in a vehicle on Friday night in Rapid City resulted in the death of a juvenile male and the arrest of a 17-year-old male, authorities said.
Isaiah Taha, 17, of Rapid City was arrested for first degree manslaughter, obstruction, minor in possession of a pistol, receiving stolen property, and underage possession/consumption of alcoholic beverages, according to a joint news release from the Rapid City Police and the Pennington County States Attorney’s Office.
Taha was handling a gun in the backseat of a vehicle when it discharged and struck Kade Potter, 16, of Box Elder, in the front seat near Deadwood Avenue and Omaha Street, authorities said. Potter was transported to a local hospital where he died, and police were notified of his death on Nov. 31.
The gun in the shooting incident had been reported stolen in a vehicle robbery in early October.
The suspect’s name was released because Class C Felony charge requires an automatic transfer to adult court, authorities said in a joint news release. The case will be referred to the Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office, which will make final charging decisions.
