SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A pair of local racing promoters are encouraging families to celebrate Thanksgiving weekend with a side of SuperCross.
250 truckloads of dirt have been sculpted into a race track inside the Expo Building.
“Midwest SuperCross is an indoor motocross-style family event with all dirt bikes,” Peterson Racing Promotions co-owner Dustin Peterson said.
Dustin Peterson is the co-owner of Peterson Racing Promotions which has hosted the event for 22 years, including the past seven in Sioux Falls.
“We invite roughly 400-450 riders from around the midwest to come out, we put up a track, bring in some stands and we fill the stands with race enthusiasts,” Dustin Peterson said.
Midwest SuperCross offers something for everyone, amateurs to professionals, men, women, even children.
“You’re going to see any talent level from 4-year-olds all the way up to 55-year-olds, maybe even older, that come out here and race,” Dustin Peterson said.
The lineup of kids includes Dustin’s 8-year-old son, Brayton.
“The coolest part for him is this is just a big playpen for him for a week,” Dustin Peterson said.
“What’s your favorite part of being out there?” KELOLAND’s Travis Fossing asked. “Winning,” 8-year-old Brayton Peterson said.
Brayton has been racing for three years and enjoys every minute at the track.
“Race, play with my friends, and hang out with my family,” Brayton Peterson said.
“I’ve been racing since I was Brayton’s age and it still doesn’t get old,” Peterson Racing Promotions co-owner Jesse Peterson said.
43-year-old Jesse Peterson won’t be competing this weekend, but did design and build the track, and hopes to see a full house come Friday night.
“Best thing is support the local riders and keep this venue going. We’ve been doing it for a long time and we want to keep going as long as we can,” Jesse Peterson said.
And Dustin says be ready for anything.
“When that gate drops, we have no idea what the outcome is going to be,” Dustin Peterson said.
Midwest SuperCross Racing is set for this Friday and Saturday inside the Expo Building at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. There are qualifiers at 1:30 p.m. daily, followed by racing at 7:00. Admission is $15.
