Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — The holiday spirit is alive and well as the Salvation Army of the Black Hills officially kicked off its Christmas Campaign yesterday.

This campaign is the largest event of the year for the Salvation Army.

“So it funds our seasonal program, which is our Christmas food box program and our angel tree program and then also our programs throughout the year as well. It’s a very focused window , the kettles come in on December 24th no matter what. So it’s an opportunity for us to get out and do the best that we can to help raise the money for programs and services all through the year,” Salvation Army Black Hills Area Coordinator Jerry O’Neil said.

This program continues to be a huge success every year due to the help of the community.

“South Dakotans are full of generosity, especially here in Rapid City. So the Salvation Army obviously is a great example of that each and every holiday season. So this Christmas what we want to do is come out and support them and the good work they’re doing supporting people in need. And that’s what it’s all about, that spirit of generosity and giving back,” Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said.

Every donation counts, no matter the size.

“It’s a great opportunity, every single penny adds up truly. It’s a great opportunity to do that. For folks that don’t carry change, we have QR codes on the kettle stand they can scan, they can make a donation online. It’s very safe and it goes right to the Salvation Army of the Black Hills,” O’Neil said.

Mayor Jason Salamun encourages anyone who can help out to do what they can.

“Get involved, you can’t be everything to everyone, but you can be something for someone and that’s my encouragement for you this Christmas season and beyond,” Salamun said.

The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteer bell ringers, and you can find that information here.
