Good morning, Chicago.

Facing mounting demands from the Chicago Teachers Union to finalize a new collective bargaining agreement, Chicago Public Schools officials say they don’t have the revenue to meet many of the union’s asks.

In a media briefing yesterday, CPS laid out the district’s financial priorities and sticking points in negotiations with the 30,000-member union. They claim that meeting all of CTU’s proposals would cost them $10 billion in new spending over the course of the four-year contract, and $2.2 billion for the first year alone.

In contrast, they estimate that their proposal would cost just $140 million for the first year, and far less for the full four-year timeframe.

CPS faces a deficit of around $500 million in each of the next five years, and ongoing debate has revolved around whether funding shortfalls should prevent the district from obliging CTU’s hundreds of proposals — which range from 9% cost of living raises to providing fully staffed libraries and art, music and sports programs in every school. The union’s contract would require hiring around 14,000 additional staffers, according to Chief Budget Officer Mike Sitkowski.

Richard Hightower on blocked FG that sealed Chicago Bears’ loss: ‘We’ve got to go out there and perform’

But Hightower also made no excuses for his field-goal protection unit on the game-ending play that resulted in a 20-19 Packers win.

“The best interest of the team was to kick it,” Hightower said. “And when they call field goal, it’s my job as a coach to get that executed, period.”

Fashion designer describes invitation to work on Notre Dame cathedral’s re-opening as ‘a calling’

When Jean-Charles de Castelbajac watched as Notre Dame cathedral burned in April 2019, he felt compelled to act somehow. Returning home, the French fashion designer began sketching ideas, imagining the monument’s reconstruction.

So, when the Paris Archbishop’s emissary approached him to design the liturgical garments for the cathedral’s re-opening next month, Castelbajac — a believer with personal roots with the church — felt the moment transcended mere coincidence.

Review: ‘Death Becomes Her’ on Broadway has fun frenemies and a wacky good time

“Wrinkle, wrinkle, little star,” says an under-the-knife actress named Madeline Ashton in the 1992 Robert Zemeckis movie “Death Becomes Her.” “Hope they never see the scars.”

One can always hope,. “Death Becomes Her,” the musical, has had some major plastic surgery since its Chicago tryout at the Cadillac Palace Theatre last May. As penned by Marco Pennette, with music and lyrics from the rising and talented young team of Julia Mattison and Noel Carey, the show has been nicely nipped, tucked and lifted, and deftly de-flabbed, writes Tribune theater critic Chris Jones.

Review: ‘All We Imagine as Light’ begins in Mumbai and quietly tells a city-full of stories

Every day, the world over, we feel these things because we’re human: Longing. Peace, where we can find it. Belonging. Loneliness, sometimes. Unsteadiness in an ever-expiring present tense. If we’re city dwellers in a great urban center that feeds millions while starving millions more, we can feel desperate for an alternative because time is not limitless and “the city takes time away from you.”

That quote comes from an unnamed resident of Mumbai, one of several anonymous real-life voices heard in the opening minutes of “All We Imagine as Light.” This is sublime work, with poetry and prose in unerring balance, thanks to writer-director Payal Kapadia, writes Tribune film critic Michael Phillips. It’s now in a weeklong run at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
