SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The street in front of Roosevelt High School is back open, but Sioux Falls Police say two people are seriously hurt in a Tuesday morning crash.
Sioux Falls Police say three teens in a red Toyota were traveling east on 41st Street, toward Roosevelt High School. An adult driving a gray Subaru heading in the opposite direction tried to turn south onto Sertoma Avenue.
The two collided at the intersection in front of the school and hit a juvenile who was trying to cross the street. It all happened just minutes before school started Tuesday morning.
“We had school resource officers, officers that were here at Roosevelt. They responded right away to the scene out front, along with a variety of patrol officers, to begin shutting down streets and trying to secure the crash scene and also getting people to and from school and where they needed to go,” Sioux Falls Police Sergeant Travis Olsen said.
The pedestrian and a passenger in the red Toyota sustained serious injuries. All involved in the crash were taken to the hospital. Three other people had minor injuries.
Roads were closed for several hours as officials cleaned up debris and began mapping out the scene for further investigation.
“Look at things like where various parts of the cars landed, where the cars themselves landed, where the area of the impact was, and any evidence points that might be out there like any other crime scene,” Olsen said. “It’ll help them establish in the long run where vehicles were in the roadway and how fast they may have been going.”
Police are still trying to determine if speed, seatbelts or impairment were a part of the crash.
The intersection at 41st Street and Sertoma Avenue reopened to traffic early Tuesday afternoon. According to police late Tuesday afternoon, there are currently no fatalities from the crash.
