RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in the heart of the city holds both the history of motorcycles and the beginnings of the famous Rally.
This museum is home to the largest display of custom motorcycles in the country.
“Over 85 bikes, we have tons of artwork, we have memorabilia and lots and lots of history when it comes to the rally and just motorcycling in general,” Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Executive Director Heidi Haro said.
“So having a museum that can cater to people interested in the history of the rally and its future year-round is a great thing to have,” Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Veronica Grosek said.
While the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum does tell the rich history of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as well as Motorcycles from all the way back to 1915, every year they’re getting about 10 to 12 new motorcycles rotating through their museum.
Each one of those motorcycles comes with a story.
“You’re learning and you’re seeing the history of not just when motorcycles started, how the rally started, how they affected the state of South Dakota. And just the passion and love that the owners have in them. Some of the really tiny little details you miss, we’re able to point that out to you,” Haro said.
“But having a place where people can explore that and learn about it, they can show their kids, grandparents can come in and talk about their experiences with that and the great memories. So it’s just a great place to go and check that out,” Grosek said.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame have events running each month to tell the rich history of the rally and the city, with their next event being on December 3rd for Giving Tuesday.
