SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Authorities in Sioux Falls are on the lookout for a man whom they say should be considered armed and dangerous.
28-year-old Lamont Burks Jr. is wanted for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault following a deadly shooting in late August at Dunham Park in west Sioux Falls. Another suspect, 32-year-old Walter Stewart, faces the same charges but is behind bars in the Minnehaha County Jail on Tuesday night. Court documents accuse the two Sioux Falls men of killing 29-year-old Josh Allen Jr.
Court papers say Burks and Stewart attempted to kill another person, too. The charges so far only account for two of the four people shot that day.
“Detectives have been collecting evidence, processing evidence, really pouring over evidence and interviewing witnesses,” Sioux Falls Police Department Lt. Aaron Nyberg said Monday. “Detectives have also been working closely with the team at the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s office.”
Additional details, whether via court documents or commentary from investigators, are scarce. Police say there’s good reason for that.
“It would be inappropriate for me to talk too much about relationships or motive at this point since we still have an outstanding warrant, somebody that we need to arrest,” Nyberg said.
While Stewart is behind bars in downtown Sioux Falls, it’s unknown exactly where Burks is. But what law enforcement wants someone to do if they see Burks is certainly clear.
“They should contact law enforcement and not approach him,” Nyberg said.
Santella: Should he be considered armed and dangerous?
“Yes,” Nyberg said.
According to the South Dakota Department of Corrections and court documents, Burks and Stewart are each listed on active parole for felony convictions; Stewart for drug possession with intent to distribute and Burks for both riot and simple assault.
