BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University’s football coach has reached terms on a contract extension, the university confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 on Saturday.

Per an IU source, Curt Cignetti will remain the coach for IU Football following a 10-0 start to the season, a number-one ranking in the Big Ten and a number-five ranking nationally. This is just one spot away from IU’s all-time best ranking: number four nationally, set in 1945 and 1967.

In a press release, Indiana University wrote that Cignetti’s contract will run for eight years, lasting until Nov. 30, 2032. It has an average annual compensation of $8 million with an additional annual $1 million retention bonus.

“I am beyond appreciative for the tremendous commitment, confidence, and support from [IU] President Pam Whitten and Athletic Director Scott Dolson,” Cignetti said. “I look forward to leading this outstanding program and doing my part to continue the momentum for Hoosier football.”

According to IU, in addition to records that Cignetti has already set with the university, the school’s football team ranks second nationally in scoring offense, seventh in scoring defense, 16th in total offense and third in total defense.

A 12-team national championship playoff will be announced on Dec. 8. IU wrote that Cignetti’s current leadership with the team makes them well-positioned for a spot in that tournament.
